These questions rarely produce immediate answers. They demand patience, observation, and context. Yet they also reveal the larger picture, and increasingly I believe that this broader perspective is precisely what technology journalism needs most. Reporting what happened is important, but understanding why it happened, and what it may ultimately lead to, is what gives those events lasting significance.
Editor’s Closing Thoughts: What Will I Take Home from Taipei?
Every technology exhibition ends in much the same way. A journalist returns home carrying dozens of brochures, stacks of business cards, hundreds of photographs, hours of recorded interviews, and countless pages of notes. Yet with the passage of time, very little of that remains in memory.
What endures are the impressions that cannot be photographed.
When I look back on COMPUTEX 2026, I suspect I will remember something far greater than any individual product announcement. I will remember the unmistakable feeling that the technology industry is entering a historical period unlike anything it has experienced during the past two decades. I will remember how calmly companies discussed projects involving investments measured in billions of dollars, speaking with the confidence of organizations that understand the responsibility before them can no longer be reduced to marketing slogans or short-term competitive victories.
I will also remember that the most valuable conversations were never the ones conducted in front of cameras. They began only after the microphones had been switched off, when the language of public relations gave way to the language of engineering, and carefully prepared messaging was replaced by honest discussions about the challenges facing the industry.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson I will carry home from Taipei this year.
Technology is not created on keynote stages; it is created inside laboratories.
It is not fully understood through press releases alone, but through the people who dedicate years of their lives to building it.
And the industry itself is not transformed by a single product launch. It advances through thousands of individual decisions made quietly by engineers, researchers, investors, and policymakers, often years before the first finished product reaches consumers.
When COMPUTEX is viewed through that lens, it becomes far more than a four-day exhibition on the technology calendar. It becomes a window into the years ahead. The products displayed this year will eventually be replaced, some will disappear altogether, and new generations of hardware will inevitably emerge. Yet the ideas that began taking shape in Taipei during the summer of 2026 will continue influencing the trajectory of the global technology industry long after the exhibition halls have emptied.
For that reason, I believe the true value of any journalistic assignment should never be measured solely by the number of articles published or interviews conducted. Its real value lies in understanding what was never explicitly said, connecting events that initially seemed unrelated, and transforming countless individual observations into a coherent narrative that helps readers understand not only what happened, but why it happened and where those decisions may ultimately lead the industry in the years to come.
